Red Wings Sign Four Players

The Red Wings made some splashes in free agency on Day 1.

They signed backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, formerly of the Toronto Maple Leafs to a two-year deal worth worth $3 million ($1.5 million per).

The Red Wings signed three forwards as well.

Former Nashville Predator agitator, Jordan Tootoo, signed a three-year deal worth $5.7 million ($1.9 million per), former Red Wing Mikael Samuelsson to a two-year deal worth $6 million ($3 million per), and Damien Brunner, formerly of the Swiss League to a one-year, entry level, two-way contract worth $1.35 million.

Samuelsson replaces Jiri Hudler, who left via free agency to the Calgary Flames. Tootoo replaces Tomas Holmstrom, who probably won’t return, but has yet to announce any retirement or if any other teams are interested in him.

Brunner could be a top-six forward this year, but is on a two-way contract, in case it doesn’t work out. (This means he can be sent down to Grand Rapids and back up again, without being exposed to waivers.)

Forward Justin Abdelkader has yet to sign along with defenseman Kyle Quincey. Both are restricted free agents, and are just waiting for the deal to come together, once Holland takes care of the big problems.

Oh, by the way Hudler signed a four-year deal worth $16 million ($4 million per.) The Red Wings spent $16.01 million on the four players they signed on Day 1.
