A Healthcare Expo will be held for the first time at University of Michigan-Dearborn this Friday in Kochoff Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for the insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The event will feature free health care screenings, resources, information, and services.

Lance Slatton, junior and colony coordinator of Phi Delta Epsilon, the medical fraternity on campus, is one of the driving forces behind this event. “I wanted to have an event like this because there’s nothing on campus currently for those without healthcare,” he said.

Organizations from the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, Dearborn Veterans Center, to the American Red Cross will be at the event. The Wayne County Health Department will be facilitating those at the event and showing students ways to purchase reasonably priced healthcare.

A branch of Oakwood hospital, Oak Assist, will be present to help those at the event find resources fitting for them like doctors, food, and shelter information.

“Students are already trying to support themselves. We shouldn’t have to go without healthcare because of that,” Slatton said.

After receiving survey information from Vice Chancellor, Stanley E. Henderson, which showed 25% of the UM-Dearborn population is without healthcare, Slatton felt a healthcare driven expo was something the campus community needed.

According to Slatton, a former paramedic, every possible healthcare related question can be answered at this event. “Just because you’re a healthy individual doesn’t mean you’re properly taking care of your health,” he said.

U of M Football tickets donated by Dean Jerold Hale and Chancellor Daniel Little will be raffled off at the event along with a Nook donated by the university bookstore.

Phi Delta Epsilon, CBM, Oakwood, Departnemnt of Human Resources, Z.I.A.D., Office for Student Engagement, Office of the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor Edward Bagale, and CASL Dean’s Office comprise the sponsors of the event.
