NHL Lockout: 1 Week Later

It’s been a full week since the NHL went into a lockout. As hockey fans sob and cry, the players have decided that the lockout will take longer than expected, and they are going over to Europe and Russia to play.

The NHL has already cancelled training camps, which would have been going on right now, and pre-season games up until September 30. That will soon be extended into the regular season, as no updates have surfaced over this lockout.

The Detroit Red Wings have been right in the middle of a few things during the lockout. Former general manager and now assistant Vice President, Jimmy Devellano, who had the respect of most of his colleagues, said some controversial comments in a recent interview concerning the lockout, and was fined $250,000.

“The owners can basically be viewed as the ranch, and the players, and me included, are the cattle. The owners own the Ranch and allow the players to eat there,” Devellano said. “That’s the way its always been and that the way it will be forever. And the owners simply aren’t going to let a union push them around. It’s not going to happen.”

Talk about something not Red Wing-like. Along with these comments from Devellano, a few players have gone overseas to play during the lockout. Pavel Datsyuk, yes the Red Wings assistant captain, has gone to Russia to play. Forward Valtteri Filppula and defenseman Jakub Kindl also followed Datsyuk and decided to play overseas.

CSKA Moscow, managed by former Red Wing Sergei Fedorov is the new team for Datsyuk. Filppula found a team to play for in his native Finland. Jokerit is the new team for Filppula. Finally, Kindl will be playing for HC Pardubice in the Czech Republic.

Henrik Zetterberg, Danny Cleary and Niklas Kronwall have yet to make a decision on whether they will play overseas. A few more weeks and they could make their decision.

In the final note, the 2013 NHL Winter Classic, which is hosted by the Red Wings at the Big House in Ann Arbor could be scrapped as early as November. The game is scheduled for January 1, 2013 at Michigan Stadium. Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs. A historic rivalry that should turn into an historic game.

The NHL has no plans to negotiate with the NHLPA at the moment, so we could be in for a lengthy lockout.
