The University of Michigan-Dearborn Wrestling Club took another big step in its progression as a program on campus this past Saturday.
Graduate student Dan Loyd took first place in the Mott Bear Open, in Flint, defeating three different wrestlers en route to the win.
Loyd took on fellow Michigan wrestler (Ann Arbor Club), Terrance Browner and defeated him soundly, in an 11-0 Majority win.
In Round 2, he took on Matt Ortiz of Grand Valley State University, earning the win with a pin in 2:33.
He was cruising and entered Round 3, taking on Alex Garcia of Saginaw Valley State University. It was a quick win, as he pinned him in 1:26, securing the victory.
Loyd also received the Hustler Award from Head Coach Grant MacKenzie, for the post pins this year with two.
The Wolves club now has two wrestlers in the Top 20 in the 184 weight class. Loyd is at 14, while Hassen Berry, who won the Fall Brawl, is right behind him at 15.
The next open for the Wolves won’t be until January, when they travel to Alma, Michigan for the Alma Open.
The team is comprised of only seven wrestlers. Loyd and Berry are the top two now, and they are joined by sophomores James Roberts (149) and Hussam Soukar (197), seniors Alaaedine Talab (157) and Jonathon Cugini (235), and freshman Victor Nitos (235).
