The Lady Wolverines basketball team has started the season 7-2, with only two losses coming to Utah and No. 4 Duke. The Blue Devils took a 13-2 lead early on in late November, creating Michigan’s five turnovers within the first five minutes of play.
Michigan having 20 turnovers to Duke’s 11, turned the game for these ladies. Leading the team were senior guards Jenny Ryan scoring 18 points and Kate Thompson joining with 10 points. The Wolverines were not able to cut into the lead.
The Wolverines then took on Florida earning a 59-53 win over the Gators. Down by one in the first half, Michigan made a 10-0 run in the second half. Showing big numbers again Thompson drops 21 points, senior forward Rachel Sheffer contributing 13 points, and Ryan joining with nine points, while grabbing seven boards.
The Lady Wolverines started a two game road trip last weekend with a win against Illinois State, 66-45. Using a 14-0 run in the first half and a two point-lead at the half, the ladies were able to pull through successfully.
Leading the Wolverines were Thompson with 18 points, Sheffer with 10 points, and Ryan scoring 12 points. One major factor in this game was the amount of boards, Michigan grabbing 42 to Illinois States 24.
Michigan also shot about 10 percent higher in their total field goal percentage, about 13 percent higher in their three-point percentage, and about 47 percent higher in free throws. The Lady Wolverines are led by first-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico, who are now 7-2 going into their next game, which will be in Ypsilanti against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00pm.
