The University of Michigan-Dearborn Wrestling Club wrapped up the first half of their season on November 18 at the Mott Bear Open individual tournament at Mott Community College in Flint.

Graduate student Dan Loyd took first place at the tournament in the 184 lbs. weight-class. Loyd defeated Terrance Browner of the University of Michigan club, Matt Ortiz of the Grand Valley State club and Alex Garcia of the Saginaw Valley State club in route to the tournament championship.

Earlier in the season the club traveled to Grand Valley State University for the Fall Brawl tournament. Hassen Berry became the first UM-D wrestling club member to win an individual tournament, at the 184 lbs. weight-class. Victor Nitos took fourth place in the 235 lbs. weight-class at the same tournament

Head Coach Grant MacKenzie is extremely excited for the future of the club. “Michigan-Dearborn is a great place to get an education as well as wrestle. However, no wrestling experience is required to join.”

MacKenzie is also pleased with the progress the club had made. “This year the club has seen some success at individual tournaments in Michigan. The ultimate goal is to put together a full line-up and compete as a team.”

Next semester the club is looking for more members on campus to join the team. Practices will start on January 14 and end March 2 from 3-5pm; Monday through Thursday; at Detroit Jiu Jitsu on Michigan Ave. The wrestling club hopes to join forces with the new jiu jitsu club on campus next semester.

Four events highlight the second semester. The Laker Classic at GVSU on Saturday, February 2. The Twilight Challenge at Lansing CC on Saturday, February 9, the State of Michigan Championships (Duals) at Mott CC on Sunday, February 17 and the Great Lakes Conference on Saturday, March 2 (location TBD).

Students interested in joining the club can fill out an online recruiting form at www.gowolves.net or email head coach Grant MacKenzie at grantmac@umd.umich.edu.
