The Wolves men’s basketball team took another step toward the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) tournament with a close win over Siena Heights (5-14, 4-8) on Saturday night, 74-70.

The Wolves (5-14, 3-8)  need six conference wins to become eligible for the conference tournament and Saturday’s win gave the team three wins on the season.

Beidoun then gave the Wolves a lead they would not relinquish with :58 seconds left as he converted on a three-point play that gave UM-D a 71-70 lead. Beidoun scored seven of his nine points in the final two minutes of the game and seven of the team’s last 10 points.

Senior guard Julius Porter continues to be on a scoring tear, going off for 31 points for a second consecutive game. Over his last five games, Porter is averaging 25.2 points per game. Over that span, the Wolves have compiled a record of 2-3.

The WHAC tournament seems to be in sight for the Wolves this season as they only need three more conference victories to become eligible. Remaining on the schedule are games against Marygrove, Lawrence Tech, and Siena Heights; teams that have a combined record of 6-28. The Wolves already have victories against all three teams this season.

This season is already a vast improvement for Coach John Mackson and his second-year coaching staff. The Wolves have five wins, a two game improvement over last season, and still have 11 games remaining on this year’s schedule.

This Saturday, the Wolves will play a matinee against rival Aquinas as they look to avenge a loss from earlier in the season. Tip-off is at 3:00pm.
