They’re getting ready to put their dresses, makeup, high heels, and jewelry on—the guys, that is. UM-Dearborn’s Phi Mu sorority sisters are planning to put on their largest philanthropic event of the year, Mr. UMD.

The pageant will take place on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in Quad E of Fairlane Center North.

Every year for the past eleven years, the Phi Mu Rho Beta chapter here at UM-D has been putting on a philanthropic pageant known as Mr. UMD. I spoke with Cara Castillo, Phi Mu Philanthropy chair, for more information about the event.

She told me that the pageant is split up into various categories, from a swimwear to a talent competition.

“The guys all have different outlooks on the pageant, Castillo said. “Some of them want to be really entertaining, while others are in it to win it!”

Castillo told me that the turnout for contestants this year was impressive. She noted that the event is going to be especially exciting this year seeing they have such a wide range of contestants.

“Watching the guys compete in Mr. UMD is hilarious, but I’m sure they have even more fun than we do watching them.”

The talent competition features acts ranging from dancing, playing music and maybe even some hula hooping. But, there’s more. The Phi Mu ladies even have the privilege of escorting these fine gentlemen during the formal wear round.

Castillo told me it was rewarding to work with these great gentlemen, as all the proceeds go to a great cause. This event benefits the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

“A lot of hard work and effort goes into planning and executing this event, so it’s a great way to bond with each other while benefiting CMNH,” she added.

This year, the lady behind the whole event is Phi Mu Vice President Marissa Duke. Duke had some experience in developing the event last year. But, Castillo pointed out that Duke really stepped it up this year.

“She planned nearly everything, from the food to donations to the contestant searches.” Castillo had the opportunity to shadow her and learn more about putting on philanthropic events like such. She noted, “She is truly a great leader!”

Tickets for the Mr. UMD pageant are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. But, this is not the only way to donate. There will be raffles for several prizes at the pageant, ranging from Starbucks gift baskets to gift cards from local businesses.

So come out to the pageant and feast your eyes on these lovely… guys?! I’m sure there will be plenty of laughs to go around.
