On Thursday January 16, 2014 at 2:30 pm, the Student Diversity Council conducted a meeting regarding the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s annual Cultural Expo. The Multicultural Expo will take place in all Kochoff Halls Thursday March 13, 2014 located in the University Center.

The Expo is an event where any culturally based organization such as the student Jewish organization, Albanian American club, and French club come together to celebrate diversity through food, posters, and speakers.

“You get to go around and experience different countries cultures through their food or whatever organization representatives have set up to educate you with.” said, Aida Al-Jahdhami from the Omani Student association, a sophomore at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The Cultural Expo is the most widely recognized event on campus. Over 27 organizations and 900 people participated in the event last year and are expecting an increasing amount of participants this year.

When I asked Diversity Programs manager Tasha Williams why the Cultural Expo is such a widely recognized event every year she replied: “It provides opportunity for the exploration and enlightenment of diversity as it relates to our students here on campus.”

All student organizations are welcome to take part in the event. The Student Diversity Council meetings will be weekly during the month of January and will become more regular as the Cultural Expo approaches. If a student or any organization would like to participate, you can contact Tasha Williams, Diversity Programs manager at wyllita@umich.edu.
