If you’re like me, you’re probably tired of the same worn out storytelling and plots you could repeat in your sleep. Jinn might just be the movie to break that string of boring, run-of-the-mill films to stand out as a hit of an adventure this Spring.
Filmed completely on location in Michigan, Jinn is a film that explores the Arabic mythological creature of the same name. The storyline follows a newly married couple as they attempt to find an explanation for the strange occurrences in their lives. On their quest, they find that the unusual things plaguing their lives has a dark, mysterious past.
I personally love films that focus on mythos and the unearthing of secrets. Jinn promises to be dark, gritty, and action-packed, full of mystery and fantastic graphics and even some horror. I’m looking forward to this new, fresh exploration of an old tale. I’m also excited to see a film based on lore that isn’t Greek or Roman, two tropes that I find to be too common in big mythological blockbusters. Director Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad recognized this himself when he set out to make Jinn. “I wanted to spark the imaginations of people around the world using a folklore which for the most part has not been explored by Hollywood,” he wrote in his Director’s Statement. “Entertainment is a powerful platform, one we’ve utilized as a means of inspiring curiosity about the diverse textures of culture. Through acts of shared storytelling, we can bridge cultural divides, revealing our histories in a format everyone can enjoy.”
Director Ahmad is also Michigan-born and hopes to contribute to Michigan’s future growth through both Jinn and Exxodus Pictures, the production company he co-founded alongside Richard Mandell. As if that wasn’t enough, Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad also teamed up with the Michigan company Classic Design Concepts in order to bring the Firebreather to life. The Firebreather is a sleek, dark muscle car that makes its debut in Jinn and is now available for purchase to the public at firebreathercar.com. As a modified 5th generation Chevrolet Camarro, the Firebreather has its Michigan roots, too.
Jinn makes its nationwide debut on April 4th. I hope you’re prepared.
