The holidays are a magical time for friends, family, and giving. Across the U.S, many of us spend time reaching out to our communities by getting involved in donation drives, soup kitchens, and food drives, to make sure no family goes without.
Here, in our University of Michigan-Dearborn community, students have made it their priority to give so that no UM-Dearborn family member has to go without, all year round.
Our CIViC created a food pantry on January 21, 2013 and has partnered with Gleaner’s to provide food for students on campus ever since.
Although it hasn’t been open very long, since its opening day it’s distributed over 3,000 pounds of food to students in need. It’s raised over 3,500 pounds of food and toiletry items, and over $3,000 in financial contributions.
The mission of the CIViC’s food pantry is intended to provide temporary food assistance for enrolled UM-Dearborn students in need. The Food Pantry is open to all students currently enrolled with a picture I.D.
Upon Vice Chancellor Henderson’s retirement, so many gracious donations were made to the CIViC, fully stocking the pantry for the Holiday season. It was a beautiful moment for those working in the CIViC to see so many people come together for such a great cause.
Many people don’t realize that there are students that go without on campus, or that our university provides this amazing service.
If you’d like to make a donation, below is a list of useful items the CIViC could use. All donations can be dropped off at the CIViC Monday-Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm.
