Over the summer, the University of Michigan-Dearborn Athletics Department announced they would add baseball and women’s soccer to their slate of varsity teams in the academic year 2017-18.

After a thorough search for head coaches for the two programs, UM-Dearborn has found the two people they were looking for.

Last week UM-Dearborn announced the hiring of Danielle Dow and Matt Cunningham as head coaches of the women’s soccer and baseball teams respectively.

Dow graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in business marketing. She played on the Nittany Lions soccer team and helped lead them to four consecutive Big Ten Conference titles.

“I am so excited to take on the responsibility of starting the UM-Dearborn women’s soccer program,” Dow said in a press release. “This is a wonderful opportunity and I can’t wait to start building a legacy with these young ladies.”

During her time at PSU Dow also worked with the soccer programs summer camps, helping develop the team and individual skill for girls of all ages.

“We are excited to welcome Danielle Dow, the first varsity women’s soccer head coach to UM-Dearborn,” UM-Dearborn Director of Athletics & Recreation Matt Beaudry said in a press release. “The addition of women’s soccer will increase sport opportunities at UM-Dearborn and we’re very pleased to have Danielle’s leadership qualities, accomplishments and experiences as a women’s soccer student-athlete at Penn State University guiding our new program.”

Cunningham graduated from Wayne State University with a Juris Doctorate in May. Cunningham competed on the Warriors baseball team during his collegiate days and was a two-time captain and four-time Academic All-League.

He has coaching experience with the Bullpen Baseball Academy in Novi, where he was the lead individual catching instructor and directed the organization’s winter clinics.

“I want to thank Matt Beaudry and the search committee for this opportunity,” Cunningham said in a press release. “I am excited to lead the young men of our program to success on the field, in the classroom, in the community and for life beyond their time at UM-Dearborn.”

“We are excited to welcome Matt Cunningham, the first varsity baseball head coach to UM-Dearborn,” UM-Dearborn Director of Athletics & Recreation Matt Beaudry said in a press release. “The addition of baseball will increase sport opportunities at UM-Dearborn. Matt’s passion for teaching and coaching along with his commitment to student-athlete success and development make us very excited to watch him guide our new program.”

With the athletic department’s help, both coaches will have to find a place to play their teams’ contests at with no soccer or baseball field present on campus.
