Machhadie Assi, a University of Michigan-Dearborn senior, currently working on a Bachelor of Science in biological science and a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice, is a mother of three on her way to becoming a law student.

Assi completed her academic internship program for The Washington Center (TWC) over the summer of 2016 in Washington D.C., where she won and was awarded the Global Citizenship for honoring diversity by fostering communities among diverse TWC populations.

Assi is also interning at the Arab/American Anti Discrimination Committee (ADC). In addition, she is also a part of the Women’s Empowerment Program. She also interned and worked part-time at the Global Language Network where she taught the Arabic language to professionals. Her professional track for the internship was law and criminal justice.

When talking about her internships and what they had to offer, Assi says, “It is both academic as it is an internship. There are usually international students and there are U.S. students from different states, and they divide us based on the academic track.”

Assi went on to talk about her experience in Washington D.C. and what it meant to her to be a part of such an important internship. She says, “What’s special to me is not just the award itself. You know what happened during the political events in D.C. during the summer and how people are not aware of how Muslim women are; especially after the Florida attack it was extremely heated, and when I got the internship, as a Muslim woman, I thought that I want to make a difference and do something different. I thought that with the variation of the population over there and the different backgrounds, it provided a unique platform to reflect a positive picture of a Muslim woman.”

During her internship in Washington D.C., Assi had the unplanned opportunity to represent her ADC internship on Al Jazeera News by participating in a political analysis which had to be conducted in full, formal Arabic. The political analysis consisted of Assi talking about President Obama’s speech in July 2016, as well as the presidential candidates’ speeches, and how they affected Arab Americans in the U.S.
