The new hardwood floor of the Fieldhouse gym was officially welcomed in with a dedication ceremony hosted by the athletics department on Saturday afternoon.
The floor, which has been in use since early fall, was the main focus for students and spectators in the special ceremony following the women’s basketball team’s victory over Lourdes University.
Speakers at the ceremony included Chancellor Daniel Little, Director of Athletics and Recreation Matt Beaudry, head volleyball coach Eric Stark and student athlete Marisa Sauve.
“This is an important moment for the university and for the Department of Athletics,” said Chancellor Little in his short speech.
“What it really recognizes and celebrates is how important athletics and our student-athletes are to the life of our university as a whole.”
Coach Stark spoke on behalf of the coaches at UM-Dearborn, praising the university for the investment.
“It gives us the ability to bring a recruit in here and say, ‘Look at our new court. The university cares about you. They want you to have the best.’”
Sauve, a junior forward for the women’s basketball team, spoke on behalf of the school’s student athletes in praising the new amenities.
“The floor tells UM-Dearborn athletes that they are noticed and that the university administration is acknowledging the long hours of hard work and commitment Wolverine student athletes display each day.”
Chancellor Little concluded the oncourt festivities by cutting a ceremonial ribbon held up by Mr. Beaudry, coaches Jordan Sweeney of women’s basketball, Taylor Langley of men’s basketball, and student athletes Marcus Williams of the basketball team, Shayla Smalls of the volleyball team and Sauve.
Those in attendance received commemorative miniature basketballs and miniature volleyballs.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held on the concourse of the Fieldhouse serving a decorative UM-Dearborn-themed cake.
