Michigan Dearborn faced off Wednesday night against volleyball juggernaut Madonna University and lost all three sets.

No. 20 Madonna is 16-2 so far this season and 5-0 in conference play.

The Wolverines showed lots of heart and determination during this game, but could not unseat Madonna. The scores by set were: 13-25, 21-25, and 23-25.

Michigan fell to the Crusaders in the first set but put great pressure on the ranked Crusaders in the final two sets. The Wolverine women outscored the Crusaders in kills 41-40 but could not finish them off after committing 22 errors in the game.

“Both teams took big swings and scored big points,” coach Eric Stark said. “Madonna just played a little cleaner and scored big points at the important times.”

Senior Shayla Smalls led the attack and scoring for the Wolverines with 13 kills and 2 digs. She scored 13 points on the day. Freshman Gina Giacomini had 9 kills, 2 digs and 2 assisted blocks. She scored 10 points.

The team also saw 4 service aces during the match. 2 by Samantha Nash, 1 by Heather Roberts, and 1 by Erin Parrinello. The team is 4-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.

“In our last four matches we have consistently been in a position to win, we just need to clean up our play a little to get those wins,” Stark said.

The team continues conference play this week on Wednesday against Northwestern Ohio University in Lima, OH. They then have two home games on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Aquinas College and Saturday at 1 p.m. against No.14 Cornerstone University.
