- Fight My Way
This drama is my personal favorite of all-time. It’s natural, cute, real, and extremely funny. Dong-Man (an MMA fighter) and Ae-ra (a news anchor) have been best friends their entire lives and even live next door to one another. As they deal with life’s never-ending obstacles and attempt to find their place in the world, they finally realize their feelings for each other. On the other hand, their best friends have been together for several years and deal with many struggles couples deal with, like problems with cheating, money, and jobs.
- Descendants of the Sun
DOTS was hands down the biggest drama of 2016, or even of the last several years. It’s main characters, played by the recently married Song Hye-Kyo and Song Joong-Ki, meet in a hospital one fateful day. Mo-Yeon is a doctor and Shi-Jin is in the Korean Special Forces. After seeing each other briefly then breaking up because of the secrecy and demands of Shi-Jun’s job, they meet again in a war-torn country where both are stationed. This show is a rollercoaster of action, drama, and emotions—but it’s totally worth it every second.
- Guardian: The Lonely and Great God
Also known as Goblin, this is a fantasy drama and was also a very popular series from 2016. It starred the handsome Gong Yoo and the beautiful Kim Go-Eun as its lead characters. Warning though: this is a very sad drama from beginning to end, but it has a great romance and bromance throughout it. The story is so intricate it’s hard to explain it in a short space, but simply put, this drama deals a lot with death and fate. It also goes back and forth between past and present since Gong Yoo’s character is immortal and has many powers as a Dokkaebi or Goblin. This drama also has beautiful cinematography and a powerful storyline.
- Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
This drama might be tied as my all-time favorite. It’s extremely refreshing and hilarious, and overall a very lighthearted love story between two college kids. The story revolves around Kim Bok-Joo (played by the amazingly talented Lee Sung-Kyung) and her life as a female weightlifter attending an athletics college. One day she meets a friend from her past, Jung Joon-Hyung, who attends the same school and is a super talented swimmer. As time goes on, the two become closer and closer as they start to rely on one another and develop feelings for each other. This drama was such a hit because it was so different from any other drama, and the two main stars even dated briefly after the show!
- Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
This drama stars one of my favorite Korean actresses, Park Bo-Young, as Do Bong-Soon who was born with superhuman strength. The super power is inherited by all the women in her family but Bong-Soon wishes she could just be a normal, delicate girl. But her strength is what gets her a job as a bodyguard for the CEO of a gaming company, where she hopes to create a video game with herself as the main character one day. The CEO, Ahn Min-Hyuk, falls for Bong-Soon and the two even attempt to catch a murderer/kidnapper. This drama was awesome because for once, the female lead was strong and independent (literally and physically) and didn’t need a man to save her; she did all the saving. The two main characters are also super cute and funny together; Min-Hyuk can’t stand how adorable Bong-Soon is just like the rest of us.
