Students walking in the fall commencement ceremony Dec. 16 will be clad in caps and gowns made of recycled bottles.

In support of campus sustainability efforts, this year’s graduation attire is crafted from 100 percent post-consumer recycled bottles.

An average of 23 plastic bottles were melted into pellets and spun into fabric to make each GreenWear commencement outfit.

On average, about 80 percent of water bottles purchased end up in landfills.

Other sustainability efforts on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus include a recycling program, as well as earth-friendly activities at the Environmental Interpretive Center, such as bee-keeping.

Students graduating this semester have until Friday, Dec. 8 to buy attire and pick up tickets.

Caps and gowns can be purchased at the campus bookstore or online.
