The UM-Dearborn men’s ice hockey team played a home and home series with the Aquinas University Saints and they won big in both games. The Wolverines are now 11-3-2 overall and 4-0 in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC).
The Wolverines welcomed the saints Friday night at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse for the opening game of the series. The Wolverines took care of business as they cruised to a 4-1 victory.
The Wolverines showed no rust as they took the ice Friday night. They came out skating hard for every inch all throughout the first period.
Justin Dunn (SO/Trenton, Michigan) opened up the scoring in the first period off a tip in off a Troy Saunders (JR/Canton, Michigan) shot. Saunders got the assist on the goal.
Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, Michigan) shortly after found the back of the net with an assist from Christian Ramage (SO/Taylor, Michigan).
The Wolverines ended the first period with 13 shots on goal and the Saints had seven shots on goal of their own.
The beginning of the second period saw a sluggish Wolverines out of the gate but they overcame that quickly as they added another 16 shots on goal. The Wolverines did not slow down the rest of the game as they added two more goals in the second period.
Nic LaBurn (JR/Northville, Michigan) added the third goal for the Wolverines unassisted.
Jared Dedenbach (JR/Warren, Michigan) scored the fourth goal on a beautiful pass from Tyler Groat to beat the goalie.
The saints got a goal in the third period from Zach Lloyd during a power play.
The Wolverines were led by the spectacular play of Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, Michigan) in goal as he stopped shots Friday night. He was solid and unwavering all throughout the game.
The Wolverines were led by Tyler Groat with eight shots on goal. Justin Dunn had seven shots on goal. Nic LaBurn, Cooper Cunningham (FR/Trenton, Michigan), John Barlow (JR/Shelby Twp., Michigan), and Jered Dedenbach all had four shots on goal in the win.
The Wolverines traveled Saturday to the Southside ice arena in Byron, Michigan to take on the Saints. The Wolverines won the hard hitting game 5-1.
The game was won early by the Wolverines as they scored four power play goals and had 49 shots on goal. Tyler Groat led the team scoring the first goal of the night and also assisting on two others.
Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, Michigan) and Andrew Spiegel (JR/Riverview, Michigan) each added goals making the score 3-0 through two periods.
Justin Dunn and Nic LaBurn each sealed the deal as they added goals in the third period. The Saints got a lone goal but could not get anymore traction against the surging Wolverines.
Adam Ranck (SO/West Bloomfield, Michigan) made 28 saves in another solid performance in goal.
The Wolverines will welcome Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League rival Eastern Michigan University to the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse Friday at 7:30 p.m.. This will be another home and home series as the Wolverines will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan Saturday at 7p.m.
