The University of Michigan-Dearborn men’s hockey team took apart the Eagles of Eastern Michigan University over the weekend winning both games convincingly.

The Wolverines started the action on Friday night at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. The goals were plentiful as the Wolverines took a commanding lead early in the game and never lost momentum. The Wolverines won the game 9-2.

The scoring started before the two minute mark as Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, Michigan) got the first goal of the night with Andrew Spiegel (JR/Riverview, Michigan) getting the assist. The next goal would also come in the first period as Troy Saunders (JR/Canton, Michigan) would knock in the first of three power play goals for the Wolverines. Spiegel and John Barlow (JR/Shelby Twp., Michigan) would add the assists.

The second period saw hot and heavy action as the Wolverines would add four more goals including two more off the power play. Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada) would add the first goal with Kyle Schnettler (SO/Metamora, Michigan) and Saunders adding the assists. A little over two minutes later- Justin Dunn ((SO/Trenton, Michigan) would add his lone goal for the night with an assist from Kevin Bechard (JR/Trenton, Michigan).

The scoring would continue in the second period as Nic LaBurn (JR/Northville, Michigan) and Bechard would each add a power play goal minutes apart. Tyler Groat and Justin Dunn would assist on the LaBurn goal and Nic LaBurn and Kyle Schnettler would assist on the Bechard goal.

The Eagles of Eastern Michigan University did add goals in the second period halfway through the period by Pardoski and Zalecki. That made the score 6-2 in favor of the Wolverines.

The third period opened as the second had closed with a goal less than one minute into the period by Kevin Bechard. Justin Dunnn and Nic LaBurn assisted on the goal and the Wolverines were feeling the groove. Less than a minute later Zach Nichols (SO/Dearborn, Michigan) added a goal with an assist from Conor Cunningham (FR/Trenton, Michigan).

The final goal of the night was off the stick of Conor Cunningham with assists from Tyler Groat and Andrew Palushaj (SR/Livonia, Michigan). That gave the Wolverines the overall game win and a final of 9-2 in this goal filled game.

UM-Dearborn had nine power plays in the game off 11 penalties suffered by the Eagles. The Eagles spent 30 minutes in the box during the game. The Wolverines killed all four power plays they faced and spent 12 minutes in the box as they suffered six infractions during the game.

The Wolverines then traveled to Ann Arbor to face the Eagles on Saturday night. This was the final game of the year for the Wolverines in 2017.

The Wolverines dominated the game again winning the game 5-0. The Wolverines have dominated the series with the Eagles especially in the last few years winning the last seven meetings. UM-Dearborn has a 24-11 record all time against the Eagles.

The Wolverines will now rest and wait until January 12 when they will take on Western Michigan University for a two game set back-to-back on the Broncos home ice. Game time is 6:45pm.

The UM-Dearborn hockey team now sits atop first place in the WHAC (Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) with a perfect 5-0 record. Overall they have a 13-3-2 record. The action is just heating up for the hockey team and next year will bring with it the hopes of the young men who play. Until next year.
