Zap! Pow! Bam!: The Art of the Comic Book Cover is the first exhibit of the year for the Berkowitz Gallery.

Guest curator and collector Corey Gross’s best work will be featured in the exhibit. The collection focuses on the idea of the printed comic book cover as an art object. The exhibition showcases 250 comic books, each with popular themes of the art form.

Mr. Gross has spent his life collecting comic books, dating back from the 1960’s to today and proudly owns almost every Iron Man issue ever created. That being said, the collection will include a large selection of Iron Man comics that will illustrate how comic books have evolved over the last fifty years.

In addition, the exhibit will feature original artwork courtesy of Western Michigan University Art collection that were used to print comic book covers and give a better understanding of how they are produced.

Some themes of the comics include: social issues in comics, gimmick covers of the 90’s, superhero pose covers, unusual text integration/title banners, first issues and use of super powers.

Finally, to tune in on comic book culture and spice up the visual diversity, pop culture items including action figures, collectibles, promotional items and tchotchkes, are presented with the comics.
