Are you a movie lover?

Are you a hardcore Star Wars fanboy?

“If you are a movie lover you will love The Last Jedi, but if you are a hardcore fan you will hate it” Dan usher at Phoenix Theaters.

The Last Jedi is getting such mixed reviews it is hard to decide if it is a good movie or a major box office flop. The Last Jedi by pure numbers is on its way to be the highest grossing movie of 2017.

The space battles are epic in effects and reality. They keep you on the edge of your seat from the moment you see that iconic crawl start.

Rian Johnson has outdone himself with all the battle scenes and the different locals the film was shot in. He has also upset the Star Wars community in a way never seen before.

In The Force Awakens directed by J.J. Abrams he introduced a whole new set of characters and left the audience with several questions to be resolved in the next two movies. Johnson failed to resolve any of them in The Last Jedi to anyone’s satisfaction. This leaves the burden on Abrams to appease the fans or go his own way with episode nine that comes out in 2019.

Johnson did not give any explanations of who Supreme Leader Snoke is. He also did not say who Rey’s parents were. Johnson did give the audience an answer to Rey’s parents, but the way he did it leaves the audience an unsure feeling if it is the truth.

Johnson has also caused a huge backlash with the way he handled the Luke Skywalker situation in the movie. Skywalker looks completely out of his element and broken. Mark Hamill who plays Luke Skywalker said he felt out of his element and did not always agree with how Johnson handled Luke in the movie.

Despite the Skywalker problem for fans, Johnson seems to have made a good movie but not one that the die-hard fans wanted to see overall. There is also a petition on social media and fan sites trying to force Disney to remove The Last Jedi from Star Wars canon.

The movie itself is good with the plot being solid and likeable for most people. The film is a great tribute to Carrie Fisher who plays General Leia Organa. The Last Jedi is the final film for Fisher as she passed away a year ago shortly after she had completed her parts for the movie.

Fisher has a performance for the ages as she makes the hard calls and leads the Resistance to fight for another day. No one is sure what will happen to General Organa in episode nine, but we know for sure Carrie Fisher will not be the actress who portrays her. Maybe they will CGI her into the film to give her an ending.

As for the film itself it may not be the “normal” Star Wars all the fans grew up with but neither were the prequels for most fans. Disney and Johnson are delivering the story they think will resonate with most of the audience.

Personally I am torn by the movie and am still undecided about it as a whole. I plan on seeing it again before it leaves theaters.

See it for yourself in theaters while it lasts and tell the Michigan Journal your thoughts about the film.
