Mati’s Deli is a hidden Dearborn gem. Located off the main Westborn strip on Monroe between Michigan Avenue and Outer Drive, they have been serving up New York Style sandwiches piled high with meat for over 30 years.
The sandwich menu is massive, ranging from staples like the rweeuben or pastrami, to customer-named specialties like Carol’s Temptation or (my favorite) Hank’s Delight. The mountainous Hank’s Delight consists of hot corned beef, pastrami and swiss with hot mustard on pumpernickel. All the sandwiches come with the deli staple, a pickle spear.
There’s more to this deli than just sandwiches though; when you get to the counter you’ll be tempted to order a Knish–mashed potatoes wrapped in pastry and smothered in gravy. The special menu changes all the time with offerings like hot open-faced sandwiches. Every day presents a different soup, and the homemade brownies are a must.
It may be a good idea to call your order ahead around lunch as the location is a favorite among the local lunch crowd and the wait times can get a bit long. That being said, if you spend time in the Dearborn area you owe it to yourself to try it out.
