The UM-Dearborn men’s hockey team won an important game Saturday against the Indiana Tech Warriors in the 4-3 game to secure the No.1 seed in the upcoming Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) postseason tournament.

The Wolverines started the scoring as junior Tyler Groat scored the first of his two goals at 18:43 of the first period. His goal was assisted by freshman Billy Brock and senior Andrew Palushaj. The team ended the first period up 1-0.

The second period saw increased intensity and more scoring from both sides. Adam Vannelli would score at the 3:49 mark tying it up for the Warriors. The Wolverines then scored three goals at the 5:18, 18:00, and 19:51 mark of the second period. Goals by freshman Silas Johnson, Tyler Groat, and Billy Brock. They were assisted by junior captain Kevin Bechard, junior Troy Saunders, Andrew Palushaj, Billy Brock, Tyler Groat, and senior Marcus McSweeney.

This gave the Wolverines a commanding 4-1 lead after two periods. The Warriors scored twice in the third period. Francesco Corona scored at 10:44 and Adam Jonak scored at 19:09.

Freshman Jordan Gilbert stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced.

The Wolverines were also supposed to play the Warriors in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday night, but due to weather concerns the game was postponed.

The Wolverines now have an overall record of 19-4-2 and a WHAC record of 6-0. They will play at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for their final home game of the season. They will welcome the Oakland University Grizzlies who they have an 11-16 record overall against.
