The UM-Dearborn women’s softball team traveled to Upland, Indiana, over the weekend to play Taylor University and Asbury University twice. Games were cancelled on Friday, leaving the Wolverines to play one game apiece against both schools Saturday in a doubleheader.

First up was against the Asbury University Eagles. The Wolverines started the scoring off in the second inning when senior Ellie Kauten singled in a run scored by freshman Kaylie McConnell.

The Eagles got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring two runs from Madison Moss and Deana Phillips. The score was 2-1 Eagles at the bottom of the fourth.

Kauten tied up the game in the sixth as she went deep on a 3-2 count over the center field wall. The Wolverines would not let up there as they scored four more runs in the seventh inning, putting the game away by a score of 6-2.

Junior Sarah Prashad, junior Rachel Dollard, freshman Megan Lohner, and sophomore Amy Jarrett scored the runs in the seventh inning.

Junior Julie St. John started the game on the mound for the Wolverines and went 3.1 innings. She gave up two hits, had a walk, and a strikeout through 54 pitches. Senior Gina Verduzco pitched 3.2 innings and secured the win. She gave up a hit, seven strikeouts, and a walk through 53 pitches.

The Wolverines played the (RV) Taylor University Trojans in the second half of the doubleheader. The Wolverines got the early lead in the second inning when senior Riley Miller and sophomore Olivia Cottom scored for the Wolverines.

In the third inning, senior Jordan Ewald scored another run while the Trojans scored two runs to make it 3-2 Wolverines. Cassie Kuizin homered over the left field fence and Davis Carter scored the runs for the Trojans.

In the fourth inning, the Wolverines started to pour on the runs as freshman Meaghan Marcus and Sarah Preshad added runs, giving the Wolverines three runs in the fourth inning making the score 7-2 in the Wolverines favor.

The fifth inning saw the Wolverines adding three more runs, making the final score 10-2 and giving them the sweep of the weekend. They are now 7-5 overall in this fresh season. Kauten and Miller were some who scored in the fifth inning.

Jordan Ewald and junior Rachel Clem both homered in the game.

Sophomore Samantha Torongeau pitched three innings for the Wolverines while recording five hits, two errors, three walks, and a strike out on 60 pitches. Gina Verduzco got the win with pitching two innings. She had two hits, two strikeouts, and a walk on 38 pitches.

The Wolverines will next face the University of the Cumberlands on March 16 at 4 p.m. in another doubleheader.
