The UM-Dearborn men’s baseball team got their first Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) victory in program history against the Aquinas College Saints in Grand Rapids on Sunday.
The Wolverines and Saints each got a run in the first inning. The Wolverines got the run as freshman Andrew Capone scored on a single from junior Daniel Kerr.
The Wolverines added runs in the third inning with runs coming from freshman Paul Husak Jr., freshman Justin Dolney, and sophomore Ryan Beadle. The Beadle run came on a triple from senior Chase Turner. The Saints also scored three runs in the third inning, making it 4-4.
The scoring continued for the Wolverines in the fourth inning with the Wolverines getting three more runs. Freshman Andrew Capone scored, sophomore Cole VanWagoner scored, and sophomore Antonio Carta scored for the Wolverines. The Saints added a run in the bottom of the inning, making the score 7-5 Wolverines.
In the sixth inning, the scoring continued with VanWagoner scoring for the Wolverines on a Kerr fly ball. The Saints added another run, making the score 8-6.
Beadle and Turner scored in the seventh inning, giving the Wolverines the win at 10-6. The Wolverines had 14 hits on the day. They also had 10 strikeouts and five walks in the game. Freshman Ramiro Rodriguez and freshman Cameron Tubbs combined on the mound for nine strikeouts and seven walks.
The Wolverines also played a doubleheader on Saturday against the Saints. In the first game, the Saints jumped out to an early lead on the Wolverines scoring four runs in the first, and four runs in the second inning. They never looked back, winning the game 15-5.
The five Wolverine runs came on eight hits. They also had six strikeouts and four walks in the first game. Ryan Beadle scored two runs. Andrew Capone, Justin Dolney, and Cole VanWagoner scored the runs for the Wolverines.
Freshmen John Dyda and Malcolm Harris combined on the mound for the Wolverines, giving up 17 hits and had three walks and three strikeouts.
The second game was much closer. The Wolverines took the Saints to the ninth inning where they scored two points, but just couldn’t get the win as they lost by a score of 8-7.
The Wolverines got runs from Cole VanWagoner (2), Antonio Carta (2), Chase Turner, Daniel Kerr, and junior Waymond Lemon Jr. The Kerr run came on a first inning homer.
The team had eight hits, five strikeouts, and four walks in the game. Freshman Dan Bos and junior Nick Montroy combined on the mound for the Wolverines, giving up 11 hits, seven strikeouts, and six walks.
The Wolverines now have an overall record of 3-17 and a 1-11 record in the WHAC. They next play in Adrian as they take on Siena Heights University on March 24 at 1 p.m.
