The men’s ice hockey team had two games this week against the Red Birds of Illinois State University at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. The No. 11 UM-Dearborn Wolverines came in with a 4-1 overall record and a 2-1 record in the WHAC (Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference). The Red Birds had a 2-6 overall record. The first game was on Friday night at 7pm.

The Wolverines came out firing and were instantly rewarded as freshman Dawson Richard found the back of the net 58 seconds into the game. Senior Kevin Bechard and junior Justin Dunn assisted on the goal.

Captain Bechard added another goal on a one time shot at 4:25 making it 2-0 Wolverines. Dunn assisted on the goal.

The Red Birds answered back at 12:43 as Ryan Kalata scored a goal beating junior goalie, Thomas Proudlock, in the top corner of the net. Proudlock did not look happy after the goal. It was 2-1 now in the first period.

The Wolverines were not done though.

Senior Tyler Groat added another goal on a wrist shot right in front of the Red Bird goalie making it 3-1 Wolverines at 13:59 of the first period. Freshman Zach Nichols assisted on the Groat goal. Dunn added another Wolverine goal with 16.3 seconds to go in the first period on a power play making it 4-1 Wolverines. Bechard and sophomore Billy Brock assisted on the Dunn goal.

The hitting and shots picked up in the second period for both teams and the intensity increased. No goals were scored in the second period though.

Proudlock was also making saves look easy in net for the Wolverines in the second period as he stopped nine shots.

The third period saw the Wolverines add two more goals both from Nichols. The first at 8:09 assisted by Brock and sophomore John Ames. The other at 16:19 assisted by senior Tyler Dalton. The Red Birds added a goal in the third period by Cory Schwartz at 9:33. He was assisted by Thomas Treiber. The Wolverines won the game 6-2.

The Red Birds were led by Kalata who had five shots in the game and Cory Wasilewski who made 44 saves in goal.

The wolverines were led by the two goals by Nichols, Brocks eight shots, Groats seven shots, and Proudlocks 15 saves. Groat and Bechard are tied for the team lead with five goals a piece and Groat was three goals from 100 goals as a Wolverine.

The Wolverines played the Red Birds again on Saturday at 7pm at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines were leaving nothing to chance Saturday night as they jumped all over the Red Birds scoring seven goals in the first period, two goals in the second period, and three goals in the third. The Red Birds got the lone goal in the second period making the final score 12-1.

Billy Brock got the night off to a good start as he scored 47 seconds into the game. Sophomore sean McLaren assisted on the Brock goal. Less than a minute later, Andrew Spiegel scored unassisted at 1:13. He added another goal short handed at 5:34 making it 3-0 Wolverines early on.

Brock added two more goals. The first at 11:10 assisted by sophomores Silas Johnson and Dawson Richard. The second at 12:09 assisted by junior Kyle Schnettler. The score was now 5-0 halfway through the first period.

Sophomore Michael Hodgson scored his first goal of the season at 13:24 assisted by Kevin Bechard and Justin Dunn. 6-0

Dunn added a goal of his own at 16:53 assisted by Brock and Tyler Groat making it 7-0 in the first period.

The second period saw more Wolverine goals, starting with senior John Barlow’s unassisted goal at 5:36. The Red Birds lone goal came at 12:28 on a power play goal by Adam Howey assisted by Cory Schwartz.

The Wolverines added another goal at 14:47 by Tyler Groat assisted by Billy Brock. The second period ended with a score of 9-1.

The third period saw even more dominance by the Wolverines as they scored more goals to completely devastate the Red Birds. The first goal was scored at 2:46 by Billy Brock assisted by Dunn and Bechard. This was Brock’s fourth goal of the night.

Dunn added another goal at 7:15 assisted by Hodgson. John Ames got the final score of the night at 11:09 assisted by Dunn and Schnettler.

The win gives the Wolverines an overall record of 6-1 and a WHAC (Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) record of 2-1.

The Red Birds were led by Robert Kalata with five shots, and Cory Wasilewski who made 46 saves in relief for Marc Hayton in net. Hayton made 14 saves before being replaced.

Billy Brock led the Wolverines with 11 shots, four goals, and two assists. Thomas Proudlock made 19 saves and got the win. The Wolverines outshot the Red Birds 72-20.

The Wolverines next play the University of Utah Saturday at 7pm at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. They will look to continue their win streak and domination on the ice.
