Big Sean has returned to social media after taking time off to focus on his mental health.
The Detroit-native rapper deleted all of his Instagram posts and now only has seven posts on his page, with his new bio simply reading “2019.” He also took a three-month hiatus from Twitter, recently returning on March 25-his 31st birthday.
In a shirt that read, “can we all just get along?” Big Sean took to his almost 11 million Instagram followers in three separate videos to talk about taking a step back to focus on his mental health and well-being.
“Around this time last year, around my birthday, it was good for me,” the rapper said. “But it was wild for me, too… I wasn’t feeling like myself and I couldn’t figure out why.”
He went on to talk about how he had to reevaluate his own life. “I just felt lost,” he said. He realized something was seriously wrong when he no longer took pleasure in his craft.
“Even the music, which is like my happiness, my joy, that [has] always [been] an escape for me, was starting to feel like a burden. It started to feel like a job.”
His personal relationships took a hit, too. He said his relationship with his mother became strained, and some other relationships he had formed became toxic. Big Sean’s recent admittance of mental health struggles came just days before the announcement that he split with his girlfriend, music artist Jhené Aiko. The pair dated for two years after Aiko’s split from her husband. While it’s not confirmed that Big Sean’s health struggles contributed to his and Aiko’s breakup, Aiko recently said in an Instagram comment that she and Big Sean are “good,” and that she still has “tons of love for him.”
Big Sean then spoke about how he started to take a deeper look at himself and the people around him. “I couldn’t point the finger at anybody else,” he said. “I had to point it at myself.”
He started seeing a therapist and realized that true happiness must start with yourself.
“I started realizing that you can’t… depend on somebody for love or a good time and all that if you can’t give it to yourself,” he said. Taking time to do things he wanted and being his own friend helped him focus on self-love instead of trying to find love in other people. This also helped him find a “whole new energy” and things started to get better.
“I started to get back to making the music and it started being fun again,” he said. “I’m making the best music of my life.”
He also posted a video on his Instagram of new music he’s working on, with lyrics like, “Look b*tch please, don’t act like my friend. Be my friend.” He said that meditation has helped him deal with his anxiety and depression, too, and he wanted to share his story in hopes that others could learn from it. “A lot of [you] need insight just like I do, and probably [feel] similar, too.”
Whatever Big Sean’s been doing to make sure he’s happy and healthy seems to be working, and we can’t wait to see what his next album holds.
