The four-piece girl group is marching all over the charts, records, and fans’ hearts alike with their new mini-album Kill This Love and title track of the same name. The results are fatal.
The album features four new songs released just in time for the girls’ highly anticipated performance at Coachella next weekend, which even Ariana Grande is excited to see!
BlackPink debuted under YG Entertainment back in 2016 and is made up of Jennie, Lisa, Rose, and Jisoo.
Just like they warned, “Kill This Love” is more intense and more badass than BlackPink’s 2018 comeback “Ddu-du Ddu-du” which won them the worldwide recognition that led to a contract with Interscope Records in the US.
“Kill This Love“ brings back the marching band concept for the first time since After School’s “Bang!” in 2011, but in classic BlackPink style. The track opens with the trumpets ringing through the corridors and Lisa calling all Blinks into action with, “BlackPink in your area.”
Like always, Jennie and Lisa’s iconic rap parts slayed the song, like their fire English rap in the second verse. “He said ‘you look crazy,’ thank you baby, I owe it all to you.”
You can’t talk about a BlackPink music video without talking about the fashion, which in this case is on point like always. Soon, you’ll see everyone wearing Lisa’s bedazzled glasses or purple pigtail dreads.
The single murdered all of their previous records, executioner style. It became the most viewed K-pop music video (and music video in general) within the first 24 hours with 56.6 million views on Youtube, beating out Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” video which got 55.4 million views.
In the first 24 hours, it also reached No. 4 on the US iTunes chart (with the album at No. 8), and attained almost 700,000 unique listeners on Melon music chart, as well as several No. 1’s in South Korea. It now sits at No. 6 on Spotify’s Global 50 and US Top 50 charts, and the “Kill This Love” music video is at No. 1 on the US iTunes chart.
The next track on the album is “Don’t Know What To Do” which is a cute and refreshing upbeat song featuring vocals from all four girls, including rapper Lisa!
“Kick It” feels like a summer anthem with its chill but addicting melody. The album closes with “Hope Not,” a slow and beautiful ballad and the group’s first since “Stay” in 2016.
Big things are still to come from these girls, who are re-writing the history of girl groups and K-pop.
