Volleyball: Wolverines come up short against Rochester

The University of Michigan-Dearborn women’s volleyball team took on the Rochester University Warriors in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The Wolverines fell on the road with a score of 3-1.

The Warriors were able to control the game from the start. The first set was a close victory for Rochester with a score of 25-22. The Wolverines were able to edge out the second set with a score of 24-26. After the Wolverines evened the score at a set apiece, the Warriors finished the game off with scores of 26-24 and 25-13.  

Recently awarded WHAC Defensive Player of the Week, Mallory Lynch, proved why she received the award with an impressive 20 digs. Junior Sabrina Giacomini was a force on both offense and defense with 21 assists and 12 digs. Junior Gina Giacomini was integral for the early success of UM-Dearborn’s offense with 18 kills. Freshman Regan Sliwinski totalled four blocked shots and was able to earn nine kills to her credit. 

The Wolverines’ struggles were apparent on the field and across the statline in Wednesday’s loss. They had 30 hit errors compared to Rochester’s 18. The Wolverines also had 10 service errors, compared to just two for the Warriors. The Wolverines were the better team in many offensive categories, but the numerous errors proved costly in their defeat.

The conference defeat brings them to 3-16 overall (2-8 WHAC). The Wolverines will look to get back on track against Lawrence Tech University at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in Southfield, Michigan.
