Tyler the Creator’s yearly LA festival Camp Flog Gnaw happened this past weekend, and there was one huge upset: Toronto rapper Drake made a surprise appearance, that was apparently a huge disappointment for the festival goers.

Back in August, Tyler released the lineup of his festival which included hip hop’s biggest stars including A$AP Rocky, YG, Brockhampton and Tyler the Creator himself. Solange, FKA Twigs, and Blood Orange were also a few of many musicians who made an appearance. However, Tyler had one spot in his lineup that read “???” and fans began speculating that it would be Tyler’s friend and Blonde artist Frank Ocean.

The comments under Tyler’s Twitter post for the lineup were filled with fans claiming that the secret guest spot would be Frank Ocean. Many fans thought Frank Ocean would be the guest  due to him releasing two new singles within the past few months, and also because he hasn’t been seen on a stage since 2017.

On the final day of the weekend long festival, Tyler appeared on stage to introduce his final act, and it was nonetheless one of hip-hop’s biggest artists, Drake.

When Drake appeared on stage, the audience let out their frustration by booing him. He tried to address the crowd politely during his set, and without any confrontation said, “you know, Imma tell you, like I said, I’m here for you tonight.”

He then continued with, “if you want me to keep going, I will keep going tonight. What’s up?” A few people in the crowd yelled out “No!” and the rapper then made the decision to cut the set short.

“Well, look, it’s been love,” he said to the crowd. “I love y’all. I go by the name of Drake. Thank you for having me.” He then exited the stage, and the crowd began chanting “we want Frank!”

This incident then prompted the festivals creator, Tyler, to express his disappointment with the crowd through a series of tweets on Twitter.

“I THOUGHT BRINGING ONE OF THE BIGGEST ARTIST [sic] ON THE F****** PLANET TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL WAS FIRE! BUT FLIPSIDE, A LIL TONE DEAF KNOWING THE SPECIFIC CROWD IT DREW,” he wrote. “SOME CREATED A NARRATIVE IN THEIR HEAD AND ACTED OUT LIKE A**HOLES WHEN IT DIDNT [sic] COME TRUE AND I DONT [sic] F*** WITH THAT.”

He continued his rant with a thread of tweets blaming “cancel culture” and expressing his appreciation for the fact that Drake performed “Feel No Ways,” which the rapper has never done, and then went on to thank everyone who came out, including Drake.

“AGAIN, THANK YOU DRAKE!” Tyler tweeted. “IM F****** PISSED HOTLINE BLING WAS NEXT THATS [sic] MY F****** S*** IM [sic] GONNA PLAY THAT IN THE SHOWER RIGHT NOW.”

That same Monday after Tyler’s Twitter rant, Drake spoke of the incident on Instagram, joking that he’ll be at the festival for the next 10 years.

“Plot twist…just signed a 10 year residency at Camp Flog Gnaw,” he wrote under a series of three photographs captured from the festival. “Sorry kids see you EVERY SINGLE YEAR till you are 30,” he concluded with a smiley face emoji.

Following Tyler’s rant and Drake’s clapback post to haters, fans took to Twitter once again to make memes about the incident, and began speculating and joking that Drake will make a diss track about the festival.

So to be frank (pun intended), don’t expect your favorite artist to be the special guest performance in festival lineups, because you may end up with one of the biggest rappers in the world, Drake.
